New Mexico Mountain Club Mushroom Hike
  • 12 August 2001 (Sunday)
  • Pajarito Ski Area near Los Alamos
  • Class I 3-5 Miles
  • Meet: BA @ 8am; Loc SH1 @ 10am   (locations defined below)
  • Travel distance: approx 180 miles round trip
  • Description:
  • This will be a slow-paced walk through the woods, intermixed with car travel between habitats.
  • The emphasis will be on finding fungi and learning something about identification and the diversity of mushroom species. We will plan to visit different habitats at altitudes ranging from 7500 to 9500 ft. Although this represents a 2000 ft elevation gain, most of this will be accomplished by car.
  • Areas we examine will include some of those burned in the Cerro Grande fire.
  • May stop at Gabriel's (north of Santa Fe) for early dinner on return home.
  • Participants must be members of NMMC, NMMS, or 4cmc.
  • Items Needed or Suggested
  • Water
  • Rain Gear
  • A stout sheath knife that you don't mind sticking into the ground
  • Lunch
  • More water
  • Some people like to have a wicker picnic basket or a canvas collecting bag (completely optional)
  • Bring the usual stuff you'd have for any hike, including good boots, rain gear, and water.
  • Note: Some mushrooms are edible, many are poisonous, a few are deadly. Participants should not expect to learn to differentiate among the hundreds of species during the course of this hike. If we encounter edibles, we will note that they are such, accompanied with a warning that proper identification is critical before consuming any wild mushroom.
    Additional Notes for Club Members
  • NMMC Members are encouraged to attend any of the meetings of the New Mexico Mycological Society (NMMS), particularly the meeting on August 7th, which is the Tuesday prior to the hike. The August meeting will feature a program which provides an introduction and a basic overview of wild mushrooms. We will also have a short session on collecting techniques.
  • NMMS Members: We welcome and encourage your participation. However, please remember that this event is a hike, not a foray, and all participants will be expected to remain with the group.

  • BA: Bank of America, corner of San Mateo & Academy NE, ABQ. Do not park in first row in front of bank.
SH1: After turning onto Pajarito Ski Area road, travel approx 300 meters to a lot near the "Pajarito Cafe" sign.
