Mycological Field Trip - Report
East side of Sandias

Saturday, 31 March, 2007
Leaders: David & Terri Wallis
Details:
Field Trip visited two locations. We first hiked a variation of the Bill Spring Loop. We then drove to the Tree Spring Trailhead, where we spent about 30 minutes.

Conditions:

  • Other than a recent light dusting, elevations below 7900 ft (2400m) are snow-free. It was pretty cold and windy, and we were still encountering frozen mud and patches of ice in the late morning.
  • There's still a good amount of snow at the Tree Spring Trailhead. This area (and above) could produce some snowbank fungi during the next 2-3 weeks.
  • There is moderate flow in the area's streams--no raging torrents.

    Fungi:

  • This trip was pretty unproductive--just the usual polypores and a few things frozen over from last year.

    Critters:

  • 4 Abert's squirrels and 100 decibels worth of Steller's Jays.

    Participants:

  • David & Terri Wallis and Seamus the wonder dog.
