Field Trip this Sunday (Aug 2)
NMMS members will join with Albuquerque Open Space enthusiasts
for a
Mushroom Hike this Sunday. We will begin our outing at Albuquerque's Milne
Open Space area, and then head uphill into the National Forest.
Participants will meet at 8:30 at that the Milne Open Space parking lot,
which is located just south of the Cedar Crest Post Office. (+35.1293
-106.3653)
Bill Pentler, representative for Albuq's Open Space Division, and I spent
the bulk of Tuesday scouting both the Milne open space and a few spots
higher up in the National Forest. The mushrooms are out. Our recent rains
can only make things more interesting.
There is no charge for parking at the Milne Open Space, but (unless you
have an annual pass) there is a $3 per vehicle fee for parking at
National Forest Picnic Areas and Trailheads in the Sandias. So think about
carpooling if you plan to participate. The NMMS Members' Forum is provides
a good place to discuss carpooling and other topics:
NewMexicoMyco.org/content/field-trips-2015 .
I strongly encourage NMMS members to support your club and participate on
this Sunday's Field Trip.
Other Field Trips
* We anticipate heading for the high country with Steve Trudell during the
weekdays immediately preceding the Foray: 17-19 August. (The Foray is 20-23 Aug.) I will post details, as we have them, on the Members' Forum.
* We plan also to head into the field in conjunction with our visit
from Truffle expert Michael Castellano, who will be presenting at our
September 19 meeting in Santa Fe. Again, details will be on the Member's
Forum.
Upcoming NMMS Meetings
August 4 in Albuq - The next NMMS meeting will be this coming Tuesday, August 4, from 7-9 pm at the NM Museum of Natural History in Albuquerque. Since we know that all of you have been out collecting lots of goodies, bring some specimens to the meeting for everyone to admire.
September 19 in Santa Fe - Our next Santa Fe meeting will at the Loma Encantada clubhouse (our regular meeting place) on Saturday, 19 Sept, from 4-6 pm. We look forward to a visit from Michael Castellano, who will talk to us about hypogeous fungi (truffles).
Thank You to Chris Kerns
I would like to acknowledge and thank NMMS member Chris Kerns for his
Triple Crown achievement: presenting programs for 3 NMMS meetings in a row.
Those fortunate enough to attend those meetings will agree that Chris'
presentations on cultivation and microscopy were informative and
entertaining. Good Job, Chris!
