Trip Report
Details:
Field Trip will begin at 08:00.
Please call or Email us if
you plan to participate.
Reasonably well-behaved dogs are welcome. We may request that dog(s)
stay on a leash.
We will be in the Elevation range of 7100-8600 ft (2150-2600m).
Map of the area we'll be
exploring.
We will meet at the Sulphur
Canyon
Parking Lot at 08:00.
Conditions:
Unless we have more snow during the following week (which would be a
very good thing) the trails will likely be muddy, but snow-free.
There should still be a good flow in Tejano, Cienega, and Armijo
Canyons.
Fungi:
The last few weeks have provided various polypores and generous
fruitings of the orange jelly fungus Tremella. We are hoping to find
some snowbank fungi such as Discina, Peziza, and maybe some
Caloscypha (see photos on Mycowest homepage). We may also encounter fresh
fruitings of Auricularia (wood ears).
Critters:
The Abert's squirrels are typically abundant in this area, and I expect
we will see a few--if not several. We will undoubtedly see "squirrel digs,"
small pits where the Abert's have been harvesting hypogeous fungi
(truffles).
We haven't seen many birds during the last few weeks, but those who
choose to keep their eyes and ears open will probably not be too
disappointed. We have found numerous feathers along the trail and and
caught a brief glimpse of one very well-fed Cooper's hawk.
Equipment:
We strongly recommend waterproof boots.
Participants:
David & Terri Wallis
Notes:
This Outing is primarily a mycological field trip for NMMS members, but Mountain Club members, Friends of the
Sandias, and USFS folks
are welcome to join us.
Depending on participation, we might lead a similar outing on Saturday,
April 7th.
