Mycological Field Trip
East side of Sandias

Saturday, 8 May 2010

Details:
  • Field Trip will begin at 09:00
  • Areas to be visited are in the Elevation range of 7400-8700 ft (2250-2650 m). Field Trip will begin at Doc Long's, and may then head uphill – possibly to the the Tree Spring Trailhead area – for some different habitat.
  • Meet at the Doc Long Picnic Area PL at 09:00.
  • Directions:

  • From the intersection of NM Hwys 14 & 536 at San Antonito, head west on the Sandia Crest Rd (536). The Doc Long parking lot is approximately 2 miles from the intersection.

  • Maps:
  • Sandias (Doc Long's is designated MH3440.)
  • Getting there from Abq or SF
    Parking in the Sandias
  • There is a $3 daily parking fee in the Sandias. Those who think they will be frequenting the Sandias might consider purchasing an annual pass for $30 (good for 2 vehicles and valid for a year following the month of purchase) or an Interagency Recreation Pass for $80.
  • For more information visit the Cibola NF webpage: www.fs.fed.us/r3/cibola.

  • Conditions:
  • Tues, 4 April: There is no snow below 8000 ft, but shaded areas are still moist from the weekend's precipitation. That will probably change soon.

    Fungi:

  • During this time in past years, we have encountered some Peziza, and occasionally find snowbank fungi such as Discina and Caloscypha. We may also encounter fresh fruitings of Auricularia (wood ears). We expect that some members would also be delighted to chase down and capture some slime molds.
  • Equipment:

  • Sturdy waterproof  footwear and plenty of drinking water.
  • Current weather conditions suggest that packing some raingear would be a good idea as well.
