Christian Schwarz

Christian has been seriously interested in fungi since age 16. He got his start in San Diego, but the long, dry summers didn't suit his lifestyle, so he emigrated to Santa Cruz, the land of milk (caps) and honey (mushrooms).
After studying at UCSC, he now spends his time collecting, photographing, and teaching about mushrooms. He cowrote, with Noah Siegel, Mushrooms of the Redwood Coast — a field guide to western macrofungi. Fungi satisfy his curiosity with their seemingly endless forms, from the grotesque to the bizarre to the sublime. He has travelled in search of fungi throughout the U.S., as well as in Costa Rica, Mexico, and Europe.
Besides general taxonomy, Christian is interested in Citizen Science and mycofloristic projects and is contributing as a research associate at the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden.
