Sandia Scouting Report - 13 April 2003
Date: Sunday, 13 April 2003
Contact: David Wallis
Area Visited: Sandias - east side - vicinity of Cienega Spring
Conditions: dry; no remaining snow
Participants:
  • David & Terri Wallis

  • Notes:
  • Already it's crunchy dry in this area. Cienega Spring and a couple of others are still trickling, but moist areas are pretty hard to find. There was very little evidence of fungal growth.
  • There are several small controlled burn areas (trash fires) along the Armijo Canyon Trail (ref. KH4317). This might be an interesting place to visit in the next few weeks--or a year from now--if the areas see any moisture.
  • As of this writing, the roads into Cienega Canyon and Sulphur Canyon PG are still closed. The closest parking spot to access Cienega Spring is the parking lot at the turnoff to Cienega and Sulphur Canyons (ref. MH2135). It's about a mile from there to Cienega Spring.
  • There is a $3 daily parking fee in the Sandias. Those who think they will be frequenting the Sandias might consider purchasing an annual pass for $30 (good for 2 vehicles). You can get a permit at the main Cibola NF office: 2113 Osuna Rd NE, ABQ. For more information visit the Cibola NF webpage: www.fs.fed.us/r3/cibola.
